What Is Smoke Control?

A Critical Life Safety System

Smoke control systems are engineered to manage the movement of smoke during a fire — maintaining safe egress paths for building occupants and supporting firefighter operations. In high-rise and complex commercial buildings, these systems are a mandatory requirement under the BC Building Code.

Unlike standard fire alarm or sprinkler inspections, smoke control testing requires specialized knowledge of building pressurization, HVAC integration, and complex system interdependencies. Not all fire protection companies have this expertise.

Griffin Fire Protection does. We test and consult on smoke control systems as a core specialty — not as an afterthought.

💨
Stairwell Pressurization
Positive pressure maintained in exit stairwells prevents smoke infiltration, keeping egress paths clear for occupant evacuation and firefighter access.
🏗️
Elevator Shaft Pressurization
Pressurization of elevator hoistways and lobbies prevents smoke from spreading between floors via the elevator system.
🌀
Corridor Smoke Exhaust
Mechanical exhaust systems remove smoke from corridors and floor areas, maintaining visibility and tenable conditions.
🏛️
Atrium Smoke Management
Large-volume smoke management systems for atrium spaces per NFPA 92 and BC Building Code design requirements.

How It Works

Our Testing Process

CAN/ULC-S1001 integrated systems testing is a multi-phase process requiring careful coordination between the fire protection specialist, mechanical contractor, fire alarm technician, and building operations. Griffin Fire Protection manages this coordination for you.

1
Pre-Test System Review
We review mechanical drawings, fire alarm sequences, and the smoke control system design to identify test scope and coordination requirements.
2
Coordination with Trades
We coordinate testing schedules with your mechanical contractor, fire alarm technician, and building operations team.
3
Functional Testing
Full integrated systems testing — triggering smoke control sequences via the fire alarm system and verifying all system responses, pressures, airflows, and interlocks.
4
Deficiency Identification
Any system failures or non-conformances are documented with specific corrective actions for the responsible trade.
5
AHJ Report Preparation
A comprehensive test report is prepared, suitable for submission to your Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) to satisfy code compliance requirements.

Applicable Standards

CAN/ULC-S1001
Integrated Systems Testing of Fire Protection and Life Safety Systems — the primary standard governing smoke control testing in Canada.
NFPA 92
